KELOWNA BOXING

THE KELOWNA BOXING STORY - past & present: by brian zelley

THE HERE AND NOW

We can spread our wings and fly to the past days of amateiur boxing in
the Kelowna region, but looking at the here and now is an important starting point.

In KELOWNA there are primarily three clubs involved in amateur boxing.
The clubs and the key contact folks are:
THISTLETOWN, MADKATZ and KELOWNA BOXING CLUBS.

The main coaches are:
Graham McIntosh - Thistletown
Geoff Lawrence - Madkatz
David Habib - Kelowna.

KELOWNA BOXING CLUB  - THE EIGHTIES

The Kelowna Boxing Club was under the direction of coach
RON REITER who was selected as an area rep. in the
mid-Eighties.

The Kelowna boxers competed in many tournaments and
club show.  One such club show took place on January 14, 1984.
The event was held at the Elks Hall and the chief official was
IAN GIBSON and the host coach was RON REITER.

Some of the boxers in action from Kelowna were:
Mike Cleary, Dale Habib, Wayne Welsh, and John Ritchey.
Wayne Welsh was a Canadian Champion in the senior open.

Boxers such as MIKE CLEARY would start like many other
BC juniors.  His first major tournament was the 1983 Bronze
Gloves.  In that tournament, Cleary would defeat an Astoria boxer
in the finals.  His teammate DALE HABIB would be eliminated
 in prelim action.

That is funny, so he helped promote "Tough Guy Contests" in Nanaimo and spins into Olympic

boxing were banned?

BC BOXING CLUBS of 2009/2010

Photos- 2 Rivers boxers profiles and action shots

2 RIVERS BOXING CLUB of Quesnel, BC - By Brian Zelley
(aka - Two Rivers Boxing Club)

In the summer of 2009, the 2 Rivers Boxing Club of Quesnel, BC had been on inactive status
for a number of years, but in that time period there was a growing movement to reactivate
the club. My initial contact with the club was a former boxer by the name of FABIAN IRONEAGLE.
Fabian touched based on the past and had a deep desire to get involved if the former coach
WALLY DOERN would agree to return. As the days ticked by, plans were being made and the
enthusiasm was building. Of course, an open ended question - How would the club do
compared to the many active clubs in British Columbia?.

If activity in the 2010 BC Golden Gloves, the hosting of the 2010 BC Buckskin Gloves and
participation in other events is any example then the comeback was very good, but
the selection of a 2 Rivers boxer as the 2010 Buckskin Boy takes the club from routine
status to one of the great comeback stories of 2010 in the sport of amateur boxing.

i have been a part of many clubs since 1963 and have followed the achievements of most,
and consider the dedication and desire of the members of 2 Rivers to be one of the great
happenings - they are truly walking the "Road to Excellence" -may their journey continue
with bright lights in 2010/2011 year of amateur boxing in British columbia.

Late breaking news - 2010 BRONZE GLOVES action in New Westminster by 2 Rivers.

The Vancouver Island Story

Boxing Coaches & Officials - Vancouver Island (1954 - 2010): By Brian W. Zelley, B. Com., CA

The amateur boxing coaches on Vancouver Island are comprised of a dedicated group
of ex-boxers and other interested individuals. They are the ones that work day
after day training boxing trainees from novice boxers to seasoned
open class boxers. From 1954 to 2010, there have been many, but in 2010
there are only three key boxing clubs operating on a regular basis,
and a variety of clubs with mixed trainees from kickboxers to MMA contenders.

The three key boxing clubs are Campbell River Boxing Club, Nanaimo Boxing Club
and the Capital City Boxing Club. In the mid-Eighties there were nine key clubs
including the Gold River Boxing Clubm, Campbell River club, Comoc club,
Parksville/Qualicum Boxing Club, Nanaimo Boxing Club, Ladysmith Boxing Club,
Crofton Boxing Club Victoria Athletics and Victoria Jaycees.
However, by 1985, the Victoria Athletic Association club was not operating,
and the active boxers were training with the Victoria Jaycees.

2011 and forward
A recently formed club is GENESIS BOXING CLUB directed by RICK RAE.
The club will be host to the 2011 BC Bronze Gloves May 28 and 29th.
